چکیده

BackgroundEmergence delirium (ED) in children after general anaesthesia causes significant distress patients, their family members, and clinicians; however, electroencephalogram (EEG) markers predicting ED have not been fully investigated.MethodsThis prospective, single-centre observational study enrolled aged 2–10 yr old under sevoflurane anaesthesia. was assessed according to Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) IV or 5 criteria. The relative power low-frequency (delta theta) high-frequency (alpha beta) EEG waves during the emergence period compared between with without ED. linear relationships peak Paediatric Assessment Emergence Delirium (PAED) score were investigated.ResultsAmong 60 22 developed (ED group), whereas other 38 did (non-ED group). delta wave higher (mean [standard deviation], 0.579 [0.083] vs 0.453 [0.090], respectively, P<0.001) group, that alpha beta lower than non-ED group (0.155 [0.063] 0.218 [0.088], P=0.005 0.114 [0.069] 0.186 [0.070], P<0.001, respectively). areas receiver operating characteristic curves wave, low-to-high frequency ratio, delta-to-alpha ratio 0.837 (95% confidence interval, 0.737–0.938), 0.835 (0.735–0.934), 0.768 (0.649–0.887), respectively. two ratios had a positive relationship PAED scores.ConclusionsPaediatric patients developing increased (delta) frontal activity reduced from anaesthesia.Clinical trial registrationNCT03797274.

Emergence from general anaesthesia and evolution of delirium signs in the post-anaesthesia care unit.

BACKGROUND Emergence from anaesthesia is often accompanied by signs of delirium, including fluctuating mental status and inattention. The evolution of these signs of delirium requires investigation since delirium in the post-anaesthesia care unit (PACU) may be associated with worse outcomes. METHODS Adult patients emerging from anaesthesia were assessed for agitated emergence in the operating...

Emergence delirium in adults in the post-anaesthesia care unit.

BACKGROUND Emergence delirium in the post-anaesthesia care unit (PACU) is poorly understood. The goal of this prospective study was to determine frequency and risk factors of emergence delirium in adults after general anaesthesia. METHODS In this prospective study, 1,359 consecutive patients were included. Contextual risk factors and occurrence of delirium according to the Riker sedation scal...

Emergence Delirium

Emergence delirium (ED) also referred to as emergence agitation (EA) is a well documented phenomenon occurring in children and adults in the immediate postoperative period. With the recent popularity of the newer inhalation agents desflurane and sevoflurane, numerous clinical studies have been published questioning the association of these anesthetics with an increased incidence of emergence de...

Comparison of skin conductance with entropy during intubation, tetanic stimulation and emergence from general anaesthesia.

BACKGROUND The number of skin conductance fluctuations (NSCF) expresses sympathetic skin nerve activity. The response entropy (RE) measures electromyographic and electroencephalographic activity in the forehead. The state entropy (SE) measures mainly electroencephalographic activity. When the suppression of frontal muscular activity is complete, RE is equal to SE. RE-Delta is defined as SE minu...

Emergence agitation after sevoflurane anaesthesia in children.

Editor—We read with interest the article by Lee and colleagues comparing propofol and fentanyl for prevention of emergence agitation after sevoflurane anaesthesia in children. We thank the authors for their work in this very common and often very distressing scenario. We would like to raise a few important questions regarding this study. Pain is one of the important causes for emergence agitati...
